444 This was a wonderful book that had coulda and shoulda been a 5. I blame the editors.The editors who brought out this modern edition of the book originally published in 1942 could not in good conscience do serious editing, but they could have done better copy editing to correct obvious typos, etc., that did not require author involvement. However, the original editors should have worked with Hurston to make this a masterpiece (or maybe they tried, but she was not receptive).There is a LOT packed in here, the story of a remarkable person and a culture. On a very simple level, there are few dates in the book, and I often had trouble figuring out what year she was talking about or how long a certain part of her life lasted. This is especially confusing, because a lot of the book is devoted to her education. Not surprisingly, it took a lot longer for her to get through those years than the norm, but it was hard to track her years. Other edits are more subtle but also important. For example, it is a first-person narrative, as befits a memoir. When she is talking about many aspects of her personal life, especially her early years, she uses colloquial black language that is probably as foreign and interesting to modern black readers as it is to me, a white woman. She uses more standard English in other sections of the book. Coordinating those a bit would help. I really did not come away with a good sense of her personal life or friendships and did not feel I got a very complete picture of Zora, only glimpses, but maybe this is what she intended.It is too late to correct the flaws; it is still a highly recommended read!
